20 litres of a mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 3:1. Then the amount of milk to be added to the mixture so as to have milk and water in the ratio 4:1 is:

    quantity of milk in the given mixture   =  20*3/4 = 15 litre

    quantity of water in this mixture  =  20-15 =  5 litre

    let   x    litre   of milk be added to given mixture to have the requisite ratio of milk and water

    then  =    15+x = 20

    x=   20-5    =    5 answer
