Amoghvarsha (800-878 CE) was a Rashtrakuta emperor. His reign was 64 years. Many historians has compared him to the legendary Emperor Ashoka. Amoghavarsha was an eminent poet and scholar and wrote Kavirajamarga, the earliest extant literary work in Kannada and Prashnottara Ratna Malika, a religious work in Sanskrit. He maintained friendly relations with his neighbors. The origin of the Rashtrakuta dynasty has been a controversial topic of Indian history. Several controversies exist regarding the origin of these early Rashtrakutas, their native home and their language.
