With reference to the Cabinet Mission.
It recommended a federal government.
The Federal Government is a Government of Federation, ‘Government of India and Government of the United State’ and India is federal State. It is governed under the 1949 constitution. In May 1946 British government sent a Cabinet Mission to India for the hand over the power from the British Government to Indian leadership and make India Independent. Indian Constitution Part XI describes the power distribution between the federal government and the States.
The Main purpose of Cabinet Mission
[a] Hold preparatory discussions with elected representatives of British India and the Indian states in order to secure agreement as to the method of framing the constitution.
[b] Set up constitution body
[c] Set up an Executive Council with the support of the main India parties.
The Cabined Mission hit India on 23 March 1946 and in Delhi on 2 April 1946. The report of the Plan on 16 May 1946 was preceded by the Simla Conference of 1945 in the starting of May. The Present Constitution of India was framed by the Constitution Assembly of India which is set up under Cabinet Mission.
Cabinet Mission was composed by three Ministers of England
- Sire Pethick Lawrence, Secretary of State for India
- Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade,
- Alexander, the First Lord of the Admiralty
