The Constitution Assembly of India was set-up
under the Cabinet Mission Plan, 1946
In 1934, M.N. Roy proposed an idea for a Constituent Assembly of India. In 1935, it became an official demand of the Indian National Congress. On 8 August 1940, Viceroy Lord Linlithgow made a statement about an expansion of the Governor-General’s Executive Council and the establishment of a War Advisory Council.
Constituent Assembly was set up as per the Cabinet Mission Proposal of May 1946 by sir Stafford Cripps Alexander Lawrence. The Constitution Assembly took almost three years (two years, eleven months and seventeen days to be precise) to complete its historic task of drafting the Constitution for Independent India.
