Her candidature for Bharat Ratna Award became a big controversy that time. Because she was honored with this award during her career as a Prime Minister of India.

Women who was awarded with Bharat Ratna:

  1. Indira Gandhi – 1971 – 3rd Prime Minister of India (1966-77, 1980-84)
  2. Mother Teresa – 1980 – Famous for her work in the field of charity and peace. Also won Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
  3. M. S. Subbulakshmi – 1998 – Carnatic classic vocalist
  4. Lata Mangeshkar – 2001 – Playback singer
