    Coking coal

Coke is produced by heating coking coals in a coke oven in a reducing atmosphere. Coking coal, also known as metallurgical coal, is used to create coke, one of the key irreplaceable inputs for the production of steel. Global Steel Production is dependent on coal.

The coke making process involves carbonization of coal to high temperatures (1100oC) in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere in order to concentrate the carbon. Coking coal must also have low Sulphur and phosphorous contents. Almost all metallurgical coal is used in coke ovens.
