    She was born in Alice Ann Laidlaw, Washington on 10 July 1931.  She was the daughter of Robert Clarke and her was a teacher. She is a writer in English language.  She has won Governor General Award in 1968 which is the highest literary prize of the Canada. She is the 13th woman and  first Canadian who received the Nobel prize in literature.

    She received the Man Booker International Prize in 2009. She is also the winner of  Governor General Award of the highest award of Canada.
