How Many Times Shivaji Plundered Surat?
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj plundered Surat two times.
- First time on 5 Jan, 1664 Maratha emperor Shivaji attacked post of Surat
- Second time, on 3rd October, 1670 Shivaji again plundered Surat, Gujarata
At that time Surat was a wealthy gem port for Mughal empire and Delhi sultanate. Shivaji attacked this city to loot it and increase his wealth to survive and develop Maratha empire. His army consists of 4,000 soldiers and they burnt around 2/3 of the city.
These attacks were big blows to Mughal empire as Surat was a very busy and wealthy port for sea trade across nations. Maratha took away lakhs of money, gold, silver, diamond, pearls, rubies and other household furniture.
