The marked price of a watch was Rs. 720. A man bought the same watch for Rs. 550.80 after getting two successive discount, the first being 10%. The successive discount rate is

    Answer: (3) 15 %

    Explanation:-
    Let the second discount rate be X %
    According to the question,
    (100 – X) of 90 % of 720  = 550.80
    720 x 90 x (100 – X) / 100 x 100  = 550.80
    72 x 9 x (100 – X) / 100 = 550.80
    648 x ( 100 – X) = 550.80 x 100
    648 x 100 – 648 x X = 55080
    – 648 X = 55080 – 64800
    – 648 X = – 9720
    X = 9720/648
    X = 15
    Then, the successive discount rate is 15 %.

    Hence, the answer is (3) 15 %.
