A  gardener increased the area of his rectangular garden by.increasing its length by 40% and decreasing its width by 20%. The area of the new garden

  2. Has increased by 12%.
  3. Has increased by 8%.
  4. Is exactly the same as the old area

    Answer: (2) Has increased by 12 %
    Explanation:-
    Let be the length of the garden is X m  & the width of the garden is  Y m.
    The area of the garden = X Y
    The length is increased by 40% of a garden,
    The length of the garden = 140 X/100 = 7X/5
    The width is decreased by 20%,
    Then, the width of the garden = 80Y/100 = 4Y/5
    The new area of the garden = 7 X x 4 Y/5 x 5
    =  28 XY/25
    Increased area of garden = 28 XY/25 – X Y
    = 3 X Y/25
    Increased area in percent = 3 X Y x 100/25 x X Y
    = 12 %
    Hence, the new area increased by 12 %.
