    Explanation:-
    Let the total number of votes polled = X
    In college election a candidate secured 62% of the votes.
    Then, the opposite candidate secured votes = 100 – 62 = 38%

    Candidate elected by 144 votes
    Then,  X x (62 – 38)/100 = 144
    X x 24/100 = 144
    X = 144 x 100/24
    X = 600

    Then, the total number of votes polled is 600.

    Hence, the answer is (4) 600.
