    The Name given to the Community of Traditional Salt Pan Workers of Gujarat is Agariya community. Gujarat manufactures 73% of the salt production in India, which constitutes 5% of the world’s total salt production. According to the report of the year 2002-03 of the Slat Commissioner there are 1, 02, 103 worker locally known as Agaria engaed in Salt production. In 1949, Government of India issued notification by salt making was made license or lease free if it is below 10 acre in Little Rann Kutch.

    Salt production is a labout intensive industry and more than 1.5 lakh workers engaged in this work belong to economically and socially backward classes. Their socio-economic condition is very poor and contractors, salt traders and their middlemen exploit them heavily.
