Gujarat manufactures 73% of the salt production in India, which constitutes 5% of the world’s total salt production. According to the report of the year 2002-03 of the Slat Commissioner there are 1, 02, 103 worker locally known as Agaria engaed in Salt production. Salt production is a labout intensive industry and more than 1.5 lakh workers engaged in this work belong to economically and socially backward classes. Their socio-economic condition is very poor and contractors, salt traders and their middlemen exploit them heavily.
