Two poles of heights 9 metres and 17 metre stand on a plane ground, If the distance between their feet is 15 m, then the distance between their tops is:

    Explanation:-

    the distance between their feet = 15 m

    CDE is a right angle triangle
    Therefore, CD = base, CE = perpendicular and DE = hypotenuse
    (EC)2 = (CD)2 + (DE)2                      ( by Pythagoras theorem)
    EC = ?, CD = 15m, DE = 8m
    (EC)2 = 152 + 82
    (EC)2 = 225 +64
    (EC)2 = 289                          (square root of both side)
    EC = 17m
    Hence, the distance between their tops is 17 m.
