    Sugarcane Sugarcane is not a plantation crop. Sugarcane cultivation is one of the major farming practices amongst Indian farmers. Sugarcane belongs to bamboo family of plants and is indigenous to India. Cultivation of sugarcane in India dates back to the Vedic period. Sugarcane is the main source of sugar, Gur and Khandsari. Sugarcane was originally domesticated around 8000 BC in New Guinea. Sugarcane is a tropical grass native to Asia where it has been grown in gardens for over 4,000.
