    The first Indian to share the Oscar Award was Bhanu Athaiya. Bhanu Athaiya ( 29 April 1929) is a costume  designer. She won the Oscar Award for Best Costume Design for her work in the 1982 film, Gandhi (Shared with John Mollo).

    RE: The First Indian to Share the Oscar Award was :

    Athaiya was the first Indian star at Academy. She has designed various costumes for more than 100 films which include Guide, Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, CID, Pyaasa and Chaudhvin ka Chand. She worked with noted filmmaker like Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, Raj Kapoor, Ashutosh Gowariker and International directors like Conrad Rooks and Richard Attenborough. She also won two National Film Awards in 1991 and 2002. 

    In March 2010, Bhanu Athaiya released her book The Art of Costume Design, published by Harper Collins. Bhanu Athiya wished to return her Academy Award to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
