In Uttar Pradesh Akhlesh Yadav Government has decided to run metro rain in Meerut, Kanpur, Allahabd and Varansi, after pushing for a similar project in Lucknow. The State Government has set a timeline of June 2016 for the beginning fo the Delhi-Dilshad Garden-Ghaziabad route of metro rail.

The state cabinet approved Detail Project Report (DPR) for Metro projects at Agra, Kanpur and Meerut. Earlier, the state government has moved a proposal to bring Metro in four cities of Agra, Kanpur, Meerut and Varanasi. But now, Varanasi has been excluded from the proposal and thus no city in eastern UP would get metro.
